Workshop Photoshoot Location Location 1 - Tokyo (or Yokohama) Location 2 - Nagoya Location 3 - Nagano* (or Matsumoto) Actual shooting places within each location will vary. Most are outdoors in an area that is of interest of course. The Nagano shoot is sometimes indoors or at my wife's hair studio. * Note that the Nagano city location will have a special bonus of a Hair Salon and Stylist provided as part of the workshop due to the fact that this is my business and hometown. Other locations are considered location shoots so I cannot provide such facilities at this time. However, I am working on getting a Salon and Stylist in Tokyo and Nagoya for future shoots when possible.
When are the workshops? Please contact me for dates in all three locations. The number of workshops and location depends on the number of participants. Workshops are usually on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and Holidays. Length of Workshop 4 hours on one day. (See workshop summary below for hour by hour breakdown). Group Size and number of models. Tokyo - Group of 6 photographers with two models. Nagano - Group of 3 photographers with one model. Nagoya - Group of 6 photographers with two models. * Other cities can be arranged. Please contact me for more information. Workshop Summary (4 hour workshop) 1st hour - Camera Tips and Techniques 2nd hour - Model Photoshoot 3rd hour - Photo Post Processing 4th hour - Photography Business Camera Tips and Techniques - Here I will discuss ideas and techniques used when I shoot with the camera. For those that are at beginner leve, it will give a good example of how I as a professional shoot, but by no means is my way the only way. I also encourage other photographers, especially if they are professional or higher level to share some tips if possible. We also will prep for the models and discuss each photographer's vision of the shoot. Topics will include lighting, flash, manual aperture and shutter, white balance, composition, camera setup, etc.
Model Photoshoot - Models usually consist of 1 or 2 models depending on group size. Models will vary in experience but are paid. Models usually only speak Japanese, but we never have a problem working out communication. Photographers will be encouraged to offer direction for the model if possible. This is strongly encouraged to help build better client and photographer relationships in Japan. Plus the more direction, the better your photographs may be in Japan. Note that models are generally Japanese and female, however occasionally foreign models are invited as well as male models.
Image Post Processing - We will be sharing some tips and techniques I use. Generally this time is used to discuss workflows and to gets some ideas on how to work with the photos taken. Photoshop actions are also discussed. I also encourage photographers to exchange their ideas with one another as well. Topics include working with color, layers, masks, curves, dodging, burning, and filters.
Photography Business in Japan - We will discuss many different ideas about working as a photographer in Japan and creating your own identity or business. Topics such as language, marketing, contacts, and the internet will be discussed and how they can be worked into your Photography business or hobby. I also discuss the use of slideshows and video to help market your photography and brand. Below is an example slideshow from my YouTube Channel. Special Photoshoot Opportunities - Explore opportunities to participate in special theme based photoshoots such as local musicians, bands, or special events like Weddings or Kimono Ceremonies. I enjoy finding photo opportunities and sharing them with workshop participants. If you are interesting in breaking into new areas of photography, then please feel free to inquire about our special photoshoots that arise on a regular basis. These special shoots are always a blast and I know you'll walk away with a tremendous amount of new confidence and experience. SPECIAL NOTE! Model releases will be signed at the photoshoot so that photographers will be able to freely use and post images they take on their portfolio websites. I DO NOT hire models who are not willing to sign a release enabling workshop photographers to use the photographs taken. If you have any questions about the use of photographs, please contact me before the workshop to ensure you are satisfied with what you can get and do. Photographs are your property, but of course a model release will need to be signed by the model so that photographers will not have any problems. This is common with most modeling workshops and freelance work that I am aware of. Workshop Fee 10,000 yen per photographer. ( About $100.00 USD ) How to Sign Up - Please contact me at
